A little thought... UK computer manufacturers dropped the ball in the 80's with graphics., particularly for home and games machines. We just stuck frame buffers in everything and planned to do it all in software... doing it all in software is really demanding.
Amstrad had a bit of a last gasp effort with the Plus range. Added sprites and pixel scrolling.
True. And there were a few other weird attempts (Konix...)
Ultimate/Rare apparently had some interesting hardware, but escaped to Nintendo (who really knew what they were doing).
Indeed. There were some good spin-offs that extended systems beyond their original capabilities. Argonaut's SuperFX chip for example. And I understand the Konix (Flare) team were behind the flawed yet brilliantly bonkers Atari Jaguar.
