I cannot express enough how strong the urge is to make them (the cops) see reason. They will not, dont speak.
OMFG, DO NOT TALK TO THE COPS, you guys! They will use shit you say out of context to incriminate you. This is basic stuff.
If you’re questioned by law enforcement, you say only 3 things:
1.) “Am I being detained?”
2.) “Am I free to go?”
3.) “I refuse to speak without legal counsel.”
Then SHUT UP
My first time driving in the USA, decades ago, I was lost and saw a police car in a mall parking lot.
I swung in to ask directions, he started to move off and I accelerated and intercepted him! I jumped out and asked for directions and he was very helpful. Didn't even shoot me a funny look.
I have since learned that this was very lucky and a great risk, but then I was used to UK police.
