- Did someone say base-building? 🙂 As usual, Maurice's take here is excellent: materially grounded and collective-action oriented. @hammerandhope.bsky.social has compiled an excellent collection of answers to this reflective question. I also recommend in particular the piece by @asha-rrs.bsky.social
- This memo by @movementvoter.bsky.social is excellent. MVP has a masterful understanding of the ecosystem at large, so while the primary audience here is progressives as donors, I think it's insightful reading for anyone doing electoral work.

- Thanks for writing it 😊
- Finally read this strategic framework and found it excellent, very helpful in organizing one's thoughts on how best to do abolitionist work in this moment: bit.ly/blockbuildic The questions posed by @dreanyc123.bsky.social in "Contradictions & Tensions" (pp. 27-32) provide especially wise guidance.

- Totally, I did the same. One think I like about the association with that period in history is it reminds me of Reconstruction, for many people I admire speak today of the need for a Third Reconstruction (particularly @liberationroad.bsky.social). roadtoliberation.org/wp-content/u...
- Following the polls for the NYC mayor's race and feeling discouraged, even distraught? I get it. But here's the thing: The sense of inevitability that Cuomo is trying to project is more fiction than fact. Here are 3 reasons why. 🧵
-
View full threadDefeating Cuomo will require a lot of work, but it's work we can do. So don't be discouraged. Instead, focus on doing the work: join canvasses; reach.vote your friends, co-workers, and neighbors for your candidate(s). And for those of us with the relationships: help get those key endorsements!
- PS: Here's my 2¢ on which mayoral candidate it would be best to canvass for now, at this phase of the race. bsky.app/profile/bdli...
- Friends: with just 7 weeks until June 24 and a 20+ point gap to close, I think the time to consolidate our efforts has arrived. Let us consolidate around @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social. Be sure to rank 5 candidates other than Cuomo: Adrienne, Brad, Jess, Zellnor, and Zohran). But canvass for Zohran.

- If I had to pick just one word: criminalization. To more explicitly tie the concept of 'abolition' used in this text to the tradition of imagination, education, or organizing it comes from: the prison industrial complex. criticalresistance.org/mission-visi...

- #3: We have enough time to change conditions. At this point in 2021, Yang was still ahead of Eric Adams; Garcia and Wiley were polling in single digits. The tide started turning favorably for Garcia in late May; for Wiley, in early June. We have time to do a lot of field and win key endorsements.
- Our most important work right now is increase the name recognition of our candidates. Right now, name recognition is low: only half of likely Dem voters are familiar with Adrienne, Brad, or Zohran (and less than half with Jess or Zellnor). Thus, field work and getting key endorsements are crucial.
- #1: Cuomo's unfavorable ratings are consistently high. Cuomo's unfavorable percentages have held steadily in the 40s. (Compare: in 2021, Yang's max unfavorable was 35%.) As more people tune into the race, the first-choice poll results will increasingly incorporate Cuomo's unfavorables.
- #2: Our team also has money. The 4 WFP slate candidates (Adrienne, Brad, Zellnor, & Zohran) have a total of $15 million on hand. After the next public funds payout, they'll have more. Much of this $ will be spent on ads reminding the >40% of likely Dem prime voters who disfavor Cuomo why they do.
- At this very moment, NYS' budget bills are being printed. Once again, Albany is letting billionaires have their way. If we are to make life affordable in NYC, we need to tax the rich more. And we need our next mayor to say so unapologetically. @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is meeting this moment.
- I highly recommend @benlorber8.bsky.social's "The Right’s Anti-Israel Insurgents" to better understand the composition of forces forming the MAGA coalition. As @dreanyc123.bsky.social wrote (bit.ly/blockbuildic), one of our key tasks is to "BREAK the coalitional forces advancing the MAGA agenda..."

- The votes for @1199seiu.org's leadership elections are in, and the opposition slate, 1199 Members First, won big. Yvonne Armstrong will become 1199's new President; Veronica Turner-Biggs will be Secretary-Treasurer. Very big news, first reported by @mayakaufman.bsky.social (x.com/mayakauf/sta...).

- Ah ok. Thanks very much for providing this context and upshot 🙏
- As a national org, DSA has so far been mostly absent from pro-democracy united-front efforts to block the drive towards autocracy by Trump, MAGA, and the billionaires funding them. If, like me, you believe DSA should not sit on the sidelines, sign onto these NatCon resos by @socialistmajority.com.
- Less than a week after they were released, all of the Socialist Majority platform resolutions have gotten enough support to be considered at DSA’s 2025 National Convention this summer! Check out the platform here: www.socialistmajority.com/2025-platform

- Very well put. Perhaps you and GW members are right to give that worry more weight in shaping strategy than I currently do; all the more reasons for multiple orientations to contend for support. Similarly grateful to read your takes here, Comrade Gaehring 🙏

- Thanks for sharing. My own take on the relation / dynamic between SMC & Groundwork is that SMC-oriented work tends to make GW's much more feasible, but we still need a lot more of the former kind of work in order to substantially empower the latter, so for me it's more about the order of operations.
- PS – I also recommend signing onto @groundworkdsa.com's resos. bsky.app/profile/grou...

- I was wondering the same. What I've found so far is that the Executive Council has ultimate authority over endorsements. The EC's change in composition might make reconsideration politically feasible; the remaining question is whether bylaws permit EC to reconsider. www.1199seiu.org/constitution
- The official election results have now been posted. At first glance it looks as though in addition to winning at the top of the ticket, the Members First slate also won Area-leadership elections in 50+ of the 58 distinct areas. A truly remarkable outcome. www.1199seiu.org/application/...
- Good read for fellow DSAers. I myself practice SMC politics today primarily so that others may practice Groundwork politics more powerfully tomorrow, and so that still others may someday practice Emerge & Communist Caucus politics under conditions giving those politics the potential for mass appeal.
- Some contrarian questions about Bernie Sanders' "Fighting Oligarchy" campaign as well as the attack on ActBlue. open.substack.com/pub/theconne...
- Thanks for writing this. The criticism of Bernie that you quoted at length is excellent, as is your own summary of the criticism (that Bernie's following an old pattern in US politics in which charismatic national leaders fail to organize their supporters into independent/autonomous organizations).
- Great to see @inthesetimes.com using its profile to lift up individual labor organizers. It's a good additional way to engage readers. And as a NYC person I'm pleased to see Tony Rosario of @local804.bsky.social receiving recognition, not only for his work last year but for work going back decades.
- How can elected officials intervene in the NYC mayor's race to defeat Cuomo? By endorsing a progressive-Left slate. @emilyassembly.bsky.social has set the model standard here, doing so both collectively and individually. As constituents, our task is now to urge our own reps to follow Emily's lead.
- @ahsheek.bsky.social has been an excellent national co-chair, and this message is another act of good leadership. Looking forward to @groundworkdsa.com's DSA for All kickoff call.
- CAAAV Voice is in my view one of NYC's best orgs, for it demonstrates Leftist power-building at its best: a clear multi-racial working-class vision, assessment of conditions, and strategy to guide its member-recruitment + campaigns; steady political ed; and an unshakable commitment to base-building.
- @billfletcherjr.bsky.social is right: the differences in how different sections of organized labor are responding to MAGA – as either collaborators, ostriches, or resisters – reflects central differences in understanding the kind of moment we're in and what types of strategy are therefore required.
- Moreover, Bill is very wise to advocate the necessity of not just (1) increased labor militancy among unions but also (2) a major, sustained political education effort to promote a vision of an alternative to rightwing authoritarianism – particularly what many call a “Third Reconstruction.”
- Council Member @chiosse.bsky.social once again using his amazing social media powers for the greater good. This time, it's to explain ranked-choice voting (RCV). Bless you, Chi 🙏

- While movement moments are hard to make, we can prepare for them by building organization The voter-based orgs leading nationwide efforts to organize a united front for democracy are Indivisible, MoveOn, and WFP @fedworkersunited.bsky.social and @higheredlabor.bsky.social are exemplary labor orgs
- And while this was streaming, several DSA members were hard at work in the chat to get the join DSA link pinned. Kudos to @alvar0l0pez.bsky.social, @romkeh.bsky.social, and the rest of the @socialists.nyc Twitch digital field team.
- Good stuff from @zellnor.bsky.social here; keep going. And remember, as @tenantbloc.bsky.social's co-chair says: Andrew Cuomo is your landlord's favorite candidate.
- Striking an optimal balance between purity and power is hard. Within DSA, debate on this strategic question often centers around notions of 'independence.' @atgenevieve.bsky.social intervenes in this discourse brilliantly, explaining, how at its best, 'independence' still entails interdependence.
- Genevieve R. argues “political independence” is a liberal frame that idolizes individualism. But for socialists, there is no virtue in being alone. Instead, we should aspire toward the collective ownership and power we need to actually win. www.socialistmajority.com/theagitator/...
- For the NYC mayor's race, we'll need to do lots of grassroots political ed on ranking. @meganpiont.bsky.social's pocket-size zine makes it easy and fun to do this work at scale. Print, cut, fold – so easy that even I can do it!
- Hello fellow New York City dwellers! I made a mayoral primary zine letting you know who to rank on your ballot, important dates, why ranked choice voting is good, and who NOT to rank. I posted a free download so you can print and assemble your own here: drive.google.com/drive/u/1/fo...
