2025 watch #58: The Quatermass Xperiment. The first Hammer Horror film, adapted from a TV serial. A little bit The Thing, a little bit Frankenstein, and pretty alright when it comes to movies your dad makes you watch three beers in on a Saturday night.
2025 watch #59: Night Has a Thousand Eyes. Took a minute to grow on me, but this was a perfectly enjoyable lil’ paranormal noir with Edward G. Robinson, who plays a performer whose magic act turns into real clairvoyance and embroils him in a murder plot.
2025 watch #60: The Surfer. Nicolas Cage essentially reenacting the book of Job at an Australian beach if Job were undergoing a crisis of masculinity, beat a rat to death, then shoved it in a surfer’s mouth. It’s as bad or good as you personally think that sounds.
2025 watch #61: Empire of the Sun. My appreciation for this under-appreciated Spielberg gem deepened, seeing it on the big screen, all the horror and grandeur and shattered romance of war through a child's-eye view. The Tom Stoppard screenplay pops, the man hits every pleasing story beat.
2025 watch #62: Sinners. As soon as the vampire shit kicked in, I got that tingly sensation at the base of my skull the moment you realize you’re watching something special. Tonally this couldn’t be more my shit, like O Brother Where Art Thou and Demon Knight had a baby, but elevated. Run don’t walk
2025 watch #63: The Panic in Needle Park. “I could fix him,” she mutters, watching ‘70s Al Pacino shoot up for the hundredth time.
2025 watch #64: How to Train Your Dragon (2010). First rewatch since release. Put it on at bedtime intending just to vibe a bit, not watch the whole thing, but I was locked in. Such pleasing storytelling with a banger score, and I love its depicting of disability and artificial limbs.
2025 watch #65: Strange Days. Ever watch a decades-old film for the 1st time and get *so mad* to have missed out on it all these years? Heart-stoppingly prescient on how social media was gonna cook our brains. Maybe no one's ever been hotter than Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett in this?
May 14, 2025 17:51Realizing the “Right Here, Right Now” sample from that Fatboy Slim song comes from this movie permanently rewired my brain.
