- I’m at EPA HQ today, where the agency is giving Arizona control over its underground carbon dioxide well injection — for carbon capture + storage. Arizona will have control, instead of the federal govt. Should speed things up if Arizona wants bc federal permitting is notoriously slow
- The average person rarely sees the impact of federally-funded science. One rare exception: NOAA uses this research to help communities with wildfires, droughts, flooding, etc. On May 5, Trump abruptly pulled funding for two of the centers doing this work www.notus.org/trump-white-...
- Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski started off a hearing with EPA head Lee Zeldin today by questioning whether Trump's proposed cuts to EPA are "serious" She's expressing multiple concerns. "EPA has not adhered to our guidelines and has been largely unresponsive to questions," she said
- I'm at a Heritage foundation event, where conservative scientists + economists are arguing that rising emissions don't threaten public health EPA is reconsidering its findings that greenhouse gas emissions are dangerous to human health — the political context for today's event
- Iowa Republican Rep. Miller-Meeks just said that she is currently trying to get more GOP signatures on a letter urging protection of the IRA’s technology-neutral clean energy tax credit
- Very unusual just how fast Bosch and the other appliance makers immediately called out EPA for reported plans to eliminate Energy Star. Not something you see companies do these days. Energy Star saves average household ~$450/year and is VOLUNTARY
- Buried in the lawsuit from 18 states suing Trump over offshore wind today is this bit of news: New York can't start construction on its long-planned, much-anticipated, Staten Island terminal because the Trump admin won't give them the permits they need. www.notus.org/policy/state...
- Reposted by Anna KramerThe NIH is withholding funding from Brown University: www.notus.org/health-scien...
- Reposted by Anna KramerThe Trump administration ended an agreement aimed at fixing sewage issues in a predominantly Black, rural county as part of its push against “environmental justice.” www.notus.org/climate-envi...
- In Lowndes County, Alabama, sewage sometimes pools in front yards. In Maryland, there’s a neighborhood without drinking water. In Alaska, there’s a town living in fear of the nearby river We wrote about Trump axing the help for these places www.notus.org/climate-envi...

- At an energy forum today, analysts are predicting that tariffs on China, EU, Mexico, and Vietnam are going to remain high in the longer term no matter how badly the market reacts. Why? Trump needs revenue , and he's not going to raise taxes. That's a hard fact to get around.
- DOGE and DHS have cut funding for national security research into diseases moving across borders, terror threats at stadiums, flooding in coastal towns, TSA preparedness, etc. My latest w/ @violetjira.bsky.social www.notus.org/trump-white-...
- Statement here from Rep. @chelliepingree.bsky.social, given in response to my reporting that DOE is forcing the University of Maine to stop work on a big offshore wind project.
- Maine Rep. @chelliepingree.bsky.social just told me she’s investigating why the Department of Energy forced Maine to stop a big research project — in retaliation for Gov. Janet Mills’ refusal to bow on transgender girls in sports? Or because Trump hates wind? ICYMI: www.notus.org/energy/trump...
- scoop: Maine's innovative floating offshore wind project was just weeks away from final construction. But now Trump's Department of Energy has ordered that work stop on the $12.6 million grant, and on 2 other DOE grants at University of Maine
- Howard Lutnick sent regional climate centers into chaos last week when he let funding lapse. Crucial weather data vanished off the internet. I covered the consequences for @notusreports.bsky.social Today, he reversed course. Data is once more online, I'm told contracts are extended for one year
- NEWS: Interior Sec. Doug Burgum has formally given a DOGE-linked aide complete control over the agency's personnel and financing functions. Interior serves as the clearinghouse for data at USDA, DHS, Supreme Court, other agencies too

- Trump abruptly let the backbone of American weather data shut down yesterday. There are consequences for farmers, industries, water managers, state climatologists, and even schools. Deep dive for @notusreports.bsky.social 👇
- 🚨 I'm writing about NOAA cutting off funding for the regional climate centers for @notusreports.bsky.social. If you rely on data or services from any of the climate centers, I would love to speak with you. Please reach out, I'm on Signal annakramer.54, or email annakramer@notus.org
- National Weather Service is expanding cuts to weather balloon launches all across the country now. This is a blanket statement saying that offices are just too short-staffed. Experts have told me that the more launches get cut, the higher the chance forecasting just gets worse
- American gas is a key bargaining chip in the trade war. The Energy Sec is pitching US LNG on his trip through Gulf states rn Except — now the US industry must navigate the sticky pitfalls of rising prices and declining trust that the same trade war has created 🔌💡
- If you're a scientist and you've been asked to cut words like "climate" or "resilience" from your proposals + papers, I want to know. I'm documenting how often this is happening, whether it's self-censorship or directives from above, etc. I will keep you anonymous. I'm on Signal at annakramer.54
- 🚨If you've seen documents with proposed funding + grant cuts, agency restructures, or firing plans, you can share them with me on Signal at annakramer.54 I'm a journalist @notusreports.bsky.social covering how the Trump administration is completely reshaping the federal government's role in society

- DOE usually uses emergency powers to keep power supply during hurricanes, crises, etc. Trump ordered them to seriously break precedent and use it to keep power plants (coal) from shutting down The order looks eerily similar to a 2023 Kentucky law...
- So yesterday, the Trump administration cancelled the government contract for climate change research — the national climate assessment. Two days ago, the Daily Wire ran an article blasting the program and calling contractors "liberal climate consultants."
- Last night, Energy Sec told staff: “It is increasingly likely that our department will undergo a wide-ranging RIF to align with broader strategic priorities outlined by President Trump.” The phrasing is odd — Wright doesn’t take responsibility. Is DOGE calling the shots here? 🔌💡
- Trump just said he's giving a "guarantee" that coal will be protected against a future liberal president. He said he just had the idea right before presser. "We're writing on it right now," he said. "Your investments are going to be protected." Can he actually do that somehow?
- DOE is pushing staff at the energy efficiency office to take the deferred resignation offer before deadline tn EERE does energy tech commercialization and also helps states bring down electricity bills — areas that are stated Trump admin priorities 🔌💡
- Tariffs are very bad for Trump’s “energy dominance.” Even oil industry is not happy. Among many problems pointed out to me today — China put a critical mineral used for refining on its export control list in retaliation today. Not clear we can stockpile it 🔌💡
- I wrote about how the oil and gas industry is no longer unequivocally thrilled w/ Trump. They're scared of tariffs — and they're worried cutting too deep to the bone, too fast inside government could actually get in the way of industry growth. 🔌💡
- 🚨I’m hearing that government researchers, scientists, phds etc are being asked to keep quiet about their research work, and to not publicize when it publishes. Is that happening to you? Please reach out on Signal at annakramer.54, and I’ll keep you anonymous
- Reposted by Anna KramerShould the Trump administration give sympathetic media outlets special access? In MAHAworld, they’re already doing it. New from me for @notusreports.bsky.social: www.notus.org/health-scien...
- feels like a good time to say, you can reach me on Signal — or quietly add me to any of your group chats — at annakramer.54
- The National Weather Service just indefinitely cut a big swath of weather balloon launches across the US Forecasters say this will immediately degrade the accuracy of predictions and make it harder to give plenty of warning for extreme weather. My latest for @notusreports.bsky.social

- Wow turns out that 68 bridges in the US have an unknown risk of collapse if they get hit by a ship, and that includes the GW Bridge, Brooklyn Bridge, and Golden Gate Bridge NTSB figured this out during their investigation into the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse in Baltimore
- There's "blood in the water." "A chilling effect on free speech." That's what attorneys told me about Greenpeace getting charged $600 million in damages for the Standing Rock protests. That conclusion will likely embolden attacks on speech and expression.
- Interior Sec Doug Burgum said he’s excited about what the EPA is doing to re-evaluate the idea that C02 is a dangerous pollutant, called it “heroic work.” “The whole house of cards built around this idea that there’s this existential threat around c02,” he just said 🔌💡
- Interior Secretary Doug Burgum just said that federal lands are assets that should be counted on a US balance sheet, worth far more than the national debt He suggested that listing worth of federal lands could lower interest rates, and that developing federal lands could address debt issues

- Trump's trade war with Canada is now risking electricity blackouts in northern US states like Michigan, New York, etc. www.notus.org/policy/trump...

- NEWS: Trade war with Canada is now risking electricity blackouts in New York, Michigan, Minnesota. In all the uproar over Ontario's 25% electricity tariff and Trump's angry response, we're missing the biggest risk — the stability of the grid itself. 🔌💡

- I broke 4 stories this week for @notusreports.bsky.social on how the Trump admin is causing tumult and chaos in food safety, nuclear waste, volcano observatories, etc. My Signal is annakramer.54 if you want to share for more reporting like this. I will keep you anonymous.
- NEWS: Trump admin disbanded two independent food safety committees this week. One was about to finish digging into the outbreak of bacteria in powdered infant formula. Then they were going to look into the listeria outbreak in deli meat. Details 👇 w/@margaretmanto.bsky.social
- Scoop: Volcano observatories in Alaska + Hawaii are facing office closures. These buildings house staff + equipment that monitor volcanoes for possible eruption and ash spewing The GSA staff who could help relocate the offices are also getting fired
- NEW: Trump admin has reversed course and will no longer be closing the office that oversees one of the country's most important nuclear waste sites, the world's only deep geologic repository. I reviewed the letter revoking the termination 👇
