I see this loss of uniqueness in the rural Upper Midwest too. Places that used to be populated by white ethnic enclaves—Scandinavians, Germans, Poles, Czechs, French-Canadians—all have been swallowed into a generic rural white American identity.
New England is a lot more like the rest of the country now, swamp Yankees with rebel flags their ancestors died fighting against and PMC strivers in the cities, much the same as everywhere else. All the old peculiarities of ancestry and religion and section are disappearing into the same culture war
