- Raised the closure of Yeovil’s Maternity Unit with the PM today. Musgrove can’t safely absorb 1,300 extra births. Families in South Somerset deserve answers and a plan to restore local maternity care. Glad the PM agreed for Ministers to meet with me. I’ll keep pushing.
- I’m deeply concerned by reports that Yeovil’s Maternity Unit is to close — even temporarily. Families in our area deserve safe, local maternity care and clarity about the future of this vital service. Read my full statement here: www.yeovil-libdems.org.uk/news/article...
- Today on #NursesDay, I want to say a huge thank you to nursing staff in Yeovil and across the UK. Your skill, compassion and commitment make a real difference every day. We’re so grateful for everything you do to care for our communities. #ThankYouNurses
- Today marks the start of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek. I caught up with @dannychambers.bsky.social, @libdems.org.uk mental health spokesperson, to talk about our plans for faster support, early intervention & mental health hubs in every community. More here: libdems.org.uk/mental-health
- Today on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we remember the bravery and sacrifice of those who served and fought for peace. Their courage shaped the freedoms we enjoy today—and we must never forget it.
- This afternoon I spoke in Westminster Hall about protecting Personal Independence Payment. Nearly 8% of working-age adults in Yeovil rely on PIP—it's a lifeline, not a luxury. The Gov's Green Paper risks cutting vital support. Disabled people must be part of the reform process.
- Great to join Age UK for their Spring Reception. With more than 25,800 people aged 65+ in Yeovil, it’s vital we champion policies that value and support older people. Their Act Now, Age Better campaign is a brilliant reminder of the importance of ageing well and staying active.
- Great to welcome 10-year-old Shakeel to Parliament for an interview on his YouTube channel Tiny Titan Talks. We first met at the dyslexia rally with Jamie Oliver—today he asked brilliant questions about my life with dyslexia. Check out his channel: www.youtube.com/@titantalks33
- I raised the issue of unfair private parking fines in Yeovil during today’s WMH debate, called by my colleague @martinwrigley.bsky.social Poor signage, broken machines & unclear apps are leaving drivers out of pocket. It’s time for proper regulation—these firms can’t police themselves.
- I visited the ‘Man Van’ in Parliament – a mobile health initiative helping raise awareness about prostate cancer. Every year, over 52,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK. It’s the most common cancer in men, and early detection can make all the difference.
- It was brilliant to attend Yeovil Town Council’s annual Town Crier Competition today! A fantastic tradition, full of colour, character, and community spirit. Congratulations to all the competitors who kept the historic art of town crying alive and well in Yeovil.
- Great to be back in Parliament after the Easter break. Walking through Westminster Hall today was a reminder of what a spectacular place it is to work from — and what a real privilege it is to represent Yeovil and South Somerset here.
- Lovely to visit Pip’s Railway Carriage in Lopen for lunch over Easter Recess. A brilliant local spot serving delicious food with a warm welcome — well worth a visit if you’re nearby!
- I recently hosted my latest Farming Forum at the stunning Dillington Estate. From fair food prices to support for small farms and farming education, we had important conversations about what our rural communities need. Thank you to everyone who came and shared their views.
- Great to catch up with the team at Penn Hill Surgery to hear about the challenges they face & the brilliant work they do for patients. We also discussed antisocial behaviour in the area — I’ll be following up to ensure local concerns are heard.
- I'm proud to have launched my 'Buy Local, Back Britain campaign' – supporting local businesses, farmers and producers across Yeovil and South Somerset. Let’s back our high streets and protect our local economy. Read more: www.yeovil-libdems.org.uk/news/article...
- It was lovely to walk into Yeovil and enjoy a bit of warmer weather this week – spring is definitely in the air! I couldn’t resist treating myself (and Roo!) to a well-earned ice cream. Hope you're all getting a chance to enjoy the sunshine too.
- Pubs like The White Horse in Haselbury Plucknett are so much more than just places to eat and drink — they’re at the heart of our rural communities. It was great to visit recently and hear how they're continuing to bring people together.
- Last week I met NHS Somerset leaders to discuss the Government’s demand for 50% cuts to ICBs. I left deeply concerned. This scale of cuts risks real harm to local services and patient care. I’ll keep fighting in Parliament to make sure Somerset gets the NHS support it needs.
- Delighted to open the first Sunday bus service in Yeovil in over 10 years this morning. The 376 service between Bristol & Yeovil now runs every Sunday, making it easier for people to get around without a car & helping to better connect our towns. @somersetcouncil.bsky.social @firstbus.bsky.social
- Great to visit Burnt House Farm in Combe St Nicholas to hear first-hand how recent government decisions—like the sudden halt to the Sustainable Farming Incentive and changes to inheritance tax—are impacting our local farmers.
- Pleased to join YDH for National Supported Internship Day. Great to meet the brilliant interns taking part in Project SEARCH – a programme helping young people into paid work. Yeovil Hospital led the way as Somerset’s first site back in 2013, and it’s still changing lives today.
- Spoke in today’s Westminster Hall debate on dental access in Somerset. 700,000 “new” urgent appointments cover just a third of need—and are funded by recycling underspends. Somerset deserves the new NHS dentistry investment we were promised.
- Great to meet @swasft.bsky.social in Parliament to hear about their lifesaving work across the South West—including in Yeovil & South Somerset. 🚑 I’ve signed up to join a shift with a local ambulance crew & even got a CPR refresher!
- It was lovely to meet Jo & David last week during their visit to Parliament They picked quite the day — getting to witness a very energetic PMQs and the Spring Budget from the galleries! Find out how to visit here: parliament.uk/visiting/
- I recently visited The Roost Yeovil – a warm, welcoming space run by Yeovil Community Church that supports people facing homelessness and hardship. Huge thanks to the dedicated team and volunteers making such a difference every day. Proud to support your work.
- Across Yeovil and South Somerset, families are feeling the squeeze and small businesses are under pressure. The #SpringStatement was a chance to offer real support—but it missed the mark. We need fairer choices that back rural communities. www.yeovil-libdems.org.uk/news/article...
- I recently met with early years providers from Somerset and Dorset who raised serious concerns about new government funding rules. Nurseries are already stretched due to staff shortages and underfunding – and this could push more to close. The Government must act.
- I know from personal experience how hard it can be for children with SEND to get the support they need. That’s why I’m backing the @libdems.org.uk's new plan to fix the SEND crisis and ensure every child gets the education they deserve: www.yeovil-libdems.org.uk/news/article...
- What an honour to join Jamie Oliver, the British Dyslexia Association & my @libdems.org.uk colleagues, alongside an incredible crowd of campaigners, to share my experience of becoming a dyslexic MP! There’s not enough support for dyslexic learners, & this cause has my unwavering support.
- Great to join Jamie Oliver in Parliament to discuss dyslexia and the urgent need for better support in schools. Too many dyslexic children are still being left behind. Early screening, teacher training & proper funding are essential to help every child thrive.
- Too many children with dyslexia are being left behind. The UK’s patchwork approach to support is failing them, with gaps in early screening, teacher training, and access to assistive tech. Read my piece for LBC here: www.lbc.co.uk/opinion/view...
- On #InternationalWomensDay, I want to recognise the incredible women in my life and across Yeovil and South Somerset. I wouldn’t be who I am without the support and inspiration of my mum and my sister Billie—their strength and kindness inspire me every day.
- Women keep our community strong. From healthcare & education to business & volunteering, their contributions are vital. From nurses at Yeovil Hospital to teachers, business owners, and volunteers, our community thrives because of them.
- Yeovil has a special place in women’s rights history. In 1911, Frances Connelly cast her vote years before women had the right to vote nationwide. Her courage reminds us how far we’ve come—and why we must keep pushing for equality. Happy #InternationalWomensDay!
- Access to NHS dentistry should not be a luxury. Too many people in Yeovil and South Somerset are struggling to get the care they need. This rescue package is vital—Labour must act now to fix the crisis.
- On #WorldBookDay, I’ve written to @bphillipsonmp.bsky.social urging more support for dyslexic pupils. With 1 in 10 people having dyslexia—including 1M+ school children—too many miss out on reading due to lack of support.
- Reading should be for all, but many—especially with dyslexia—struggle. 80% go unidentified, missing support. Audiobooks help—boosting comprehension & easing reading anxiety. This #WorldBookDay, let’s ensure every child enjoys stories their way.
- Somerset Libraries offer free e-books, audiobooks & magazines for all members! Whether you love reading or listening on the go, there’s a huge collection to explore. Check it out here: 🔗 www.somerset.gov.uk/libraries/di... @somersetcouncil.bsky.social
- Pleased to support this EDM recognising the vital role of colleges like Yeovil College in education and skills. This #CollegesWeek, let’s push for proper investment in further education. edm.parliament.uk/early-day-mo...
- Great to visit Hinton St George Scout Group last week & be grilled with some brilliant questions about life as an MP! Their enthusiasm for democracy & local issues was truly inspiring. I’ll be writing to them this week to answer their questions—thank you for the warm welcome!
- The UK must stand strong with Ukraine. Forcing President Zelensky into a deal that helps Russia is a betrayal of democracy. Now is the time for the UK and Europe to step up. We cannot turn our backs on Ukraine.
- 💜 Today is #RareDiseaseDay Over 300 million people worldwide live with a rare disease, yet many face delays in diagnosis, limited treatment options, and a lack of support. With over 6,000 rare diseases identified, better awareness, research, and care are vital.
- The UK must be ready to defend itself and support allies, but this spending must be properly planned and not come at the cost of vital public services. Read my full statement here: www.yeovil-libdems.org.uk/news/article...
- I was proud to stand with unpaid carers at today’s Carers Rally in Westminster. Carers give so much but get too little support. We called for fair pay, respite breaks & real recognition—the Government must listen! Together, we’ll keep fighting for change. 💙
- Great to visit ARK at Egwood again to celebrate their King’s Award for Voluntary Service – a well-earned recognition! Their nature-based support boosts confidence & wellbeing, and I’ll keep championing their vital work.
- Thank you to everyone who Thursday's packed Flood Forum. It was a v. helpful discussion, giving a clearer understanding of the issues facing local residents. The message clear—urgent action is needed. I’ll take these concerns directly to Parliament & push for real solutions.
- I spoke on the changes to Agricultural Property Relief on Yeovil’s farmers. Some face severe stress, w. some even considering taking their own lives. The Gov must scrap this unfair tax & invest in rural mental health. I’ll keep fighting for real support to protect farmers. youtu.be/IQgUFVDLJhY
- Leonardo are leading the way. I’ve been pushing in Parliament to back their bid & secure vital jobs. Pleased my colleague Edward Morello MP is continuing the push - our community needs this investment & I’ll keep fighting to ensure Yeovil stays at the heart of Britain’s helicopter industry.
- These figures are deeply concerning & highlight the urgent need for better access to treatment & support for those struggling with alcohol dependency. No one should be left without help when they need it most. The Gov must take action to ensure services are properly funded & accessible to all.
