There's truth in this but also it's a bit of a blind alley. The instinct to dismiss all criticism as subjectivity is a boring place to end up, as it leaves little to discuss. Some art is better than other art, and it's interesting to think why.
What George Lucas got right about the original trilogy, but has never managed to replicate since, is that I was a little kid when those came out
I woke up with Duran Duran's Notorious in my head. Specifically the No-No-Notorious bit and I listened to it and notice it's syncopated. Those nos are between the beat - this is what makes it a little bit funky/catchy, that's why it's good. Made me wonder if that's a Niles Rogders' choice and yep.
