There is an important asymmetry.
Most countries are engaged in only one trade war. The United States is engaged in 192.
So folks in other countries can easily shop elsewhere, but American's can't. The trade war hurts us more than them.
This seems... wrong.
Trading with others generates gains for both sides of the transaction. Trump's tariff prevent trade, destroying the gains both for Americans and our trading partners. Recognize that symmetry and you'll see how much he's hurting Americans.

The pain Americans will experience is a bonus to Trump, who views the imposition of fear and exhaustion as signs of his strength
