The only real reason the US stopped its path towards fully allying with the Nazis was the Zimmerman Telegram which proposed an alliance with Mexico AGAINST the US.
The US was as infested with nazism then as it is today. US didn't act in the interest of anyone but themselves, at the 11th hour.
