There’s no such thing as being TOO close to a hummingbird…
Ever 📷🪶
May 7, 2025 02:31They are very territorial. If they have chicks nearby you better watch out. So yes, there is such a thing as being too close to a hummingbird 🤣😂
¡Ah que maravillosa, Pedro!
Muchas gracias Marcos!
What a gorgeous shot!
That is a spectacular shot. :)
Look how you caught the blue in the violet. Amazing. I think that might be the best Costas photo I've ever seen.
Oh I appreciate this so much! There were many in the Yerba Santa today. Up to 20 and a dozen males to choose from
Beautiful. Thanks for that reality moment.
Hummingbird: “Actually…” 🤣
Visiting a garden center, and a hummingbird hovered about a foot from my nose while it drank nectar from some salvia. I could see the red and green sheen on its neck. Utterly enchanting!
I caught one and helped it out of a glass foyer at a supermarket. I caught a hummingbird.
On the other hand, I’ve been way too far from any hummingbirds ever since I’ve moved to Europe.
That counts as a macro shot 😂
Actually yes! I forget! I had to actually switch to its close focus
Def a macro shot 😅
Absolutely gorgeous!
Beautiful
Incredible photo
I needed this today, thank you! What a beautiful pic!
😘
I get frightened they will needle my eyes out.
sorry. too close.
And with good reason. They’re feisty!
Purple demons
Amazing photo!
Stunner!!
First time I ever saw one was in our garden in Chiang Rai, in 2006, hovering in front of a hibiscus flower.
I thought it was a butterfly at first......
Yeah there is. Always. Don't touch them.
😯
Indeed
😍🥰🔥
So pretty
Stunning 💜💜💜
Soooo beautiful
Outstanding capture
When I was about 10 years old I cupped my hands around a hummingbird at the feeder. Thought for sure it would have flown off as my hands approached. Was able to hold it & it didn’t struggle to get away. I could feel the really fast heartbeat tho! I opened my hands, it waited a beat & then flew off.
Amazing! They’re so light aren’t they ?!
Holy crap ... what kind of camera/lens and shutter speed were you using?

I have the Olympus OM-1 + m.zuiko 300mm f4 IS PRO with the 1.4 tc
So working at 840mm with only a 20% crop here so nearly filled frame
He was close!
F5.6 1/2000 ISO 3200
Less than 5 lbs and it also allows me to do field macros! Like this Saken’s Velvet ant! No larger than a honey bee
WOW!
That is a phenomenal shot!
My human would disagree.
(Actually, Mina is quite nice to birbs. She sniffs them but does nothing else, at least in the six years I've known her.
Ever mammal that's not a human, dog, or cat, though, had better start running as soon as she does the "slicked back ears" thing.)
Never.
They fluff my hair on the regular & that feels pretty close, and my son always reminds me that he had training on what to do if a hummingbird beaks gets impaled in your eyeball. 😂
Hello Beautiful bird! Thank you for sharing your good fortune with us.🙏🏼
I LOVE them 💗
Magnificent photo!
Fantastic shot
Truly stunning. 😊
That's a beauty! What kind of hummer?
This is a Costa’s Hummingbird aka the purple demon 😈
Wow, certainly not. So amazingly beautiful💜💜💜
Great capture Peter!
Here’s me holding one up to the feeder.
Epic capture!!!
Sometimes I wonder how such beautiful creatures exist.
That is an exceptionally good photo!
Well done!
Wowzers Ty 🙏🌻😘😘
We should not disturb nature
Oh my.
Thank You
Does the humming bird agree, i wonder?
That's a cracker Peter!! 👏👏

Beautiful
I used to clean my hummingbird feeders with baking soda and water. Now I consider hydrogen peroxide a possibility. I have honeysuckle and buckeye, Amaryllis, roses, morning glory, and dandelions, Althea, and clover blooming. Maybe I don't need water stations?
Wonderful shot!
Sweet!
Gorgeous 💜
Funny story, I was going pee off the deck in WI, (when I lived out there) hummingbird flew up, circled the stream.
Right as it passed by my side I started to stop going, hit the hummingbird. Poor guy got a little wet and flew off to the woods.
I feel bad for getting him..
But as a bit of a point of pride, how many people can say they peed on a hummingbird. (unintentionally)
Just a weird random story about a hummingbird I will likely be telling for the rest of my life 😂
I've had 2 in the past week here in Maine. So happy they are back!
Beautiful photo
Sometimes I think that hummingbirds might be the grain of truth behind the idea of fairies. When the dart around so quickly, I can’t help thinking that people long ago must have thought they were made of pure magic.

There is if that pointy bastard’s beak stabs you in the eye.
Great photo, though.
Wow! That purple just leaps off the screen!
Wow
So gorgeous. Some of nature’s jewels.

I've been in a tropical country like 12 years ago...
And the very specific memory of an hummingbird in action indeed stuck with me since! 😯
Beautiful 👏💯
Such delicate minute birds
I believe mother nature gifted them emense power for this reason
the rich fuel of nectar supplies the energy needed to cut through the air
with a blur
as if standing still
to be able to fly backwards
adds to their amazing flight abilities provided by nature
tiny lawnmowers
I was hanging a feeder one time and a hummer came in to investigate and actually stuck his little beak up my nose. True story. I flinched. 😂
But it was a gorgeous flinch 🤣
Agreed.
Fell in love with them on a holiday to Barbados.🇧🇧
Wow! Breathtaking!
Agreed!
Beautiful!
Dude that’s fuckin dope!
They are so beautiful!!
My feeders up
Keep in mind, the Inca made that particular bird their totem and god of war.
Respect!!
Fantastic!! Well done. ♥️🇨🇦📸

How odd, it’s has such a beautiful mask, but the rest of it is just plain. It’s unusual.🥰
His wife might disagree....
