- Does anyone know of any studies of the role of music in science fiction literature (not film or tv please)? I ask because I’ve just read Fred Hoyle’s October The First Is Too Late in which music features prominently - much to the dismay and, in some cases, disgust of the book’s early reviewers!
- Although it should not have come as much of a surprise as Hoyle’s mum Mabel studied at the Royal Academy of Music and taught piano. And Hoyle himself was passionate about classical music even writing a couple of pieces with American composer Leo Smit.
- And the reason I bought the book is because Hoyle mentions the observer causes collapse view of quantum mechanics only to dismiss it in favour of what some take to be a form of the many worlds account. Except this is before DeWitt popularised that account & it’s not really MWI #physics #philsciMay 7, 2025 17:48
- He ties what could be seen as a weird form of MWI with the B (tenseless) account of time, loss of personal identity and a kind of cosmic consciousness. Heady stuff!!
