Astronomer, driving The Dish📡 to study pulsars in my PhD. Also, founded SpaceAustralia.com. Also, love a bit of astrophotography. Also, do everything with my little mate, Max. Also, Ultra-Gay. He/Him.
- Continuing on with my obsessions with #magnetospheres — have you seen these incredible new images from JWST that show high-time temporal evolution of auroral structures at the Jovian pole?! Wow! Jupiter’s magnetic field is HUGE and these aurora are from solar wind + particles discharged from Io. 🔭
- The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope has observed Jupiter’s aurora. The observations help astronomers better understand how Jupiter’s upper atmosphere is heated & cooled, and may prove useful to our #ESAJuice mission, en route to the gas giant. Read more 👉 www.esa.int/Science_Expl... 🔭 🧪
- Fantastic read for #MagnetosphereAppreciationDay ... the big geomagnetic storm that gave us aurora #OTD last year (which I just learned is called 'Gannon Storm'), really messed with lots of things (flights, agriculture, etc.) ... and it didn't stop there! There were measured effects on Mars!
- We actually just released an awesome in-depth article and a short video about the effects of the storm today to celebrate the anniversary. Worth a read! ☀️🔭🧪 #heliophysics science.nasa.gov/science-rese...
- Let’s make today (May 10) Magnetosphere Appreciation Day! A year ago today we had that huge aurora display, caused by the most powerful geomagnetic storm experienced in decades. Lovely visualisations by NASA SVS/NASA DRIVE science centre on how our atmosphere and magnetosphere responded. 🧪🔭☀️🧲
- “If displeased, he denies funding or sends disparaging e-mails to researchers’ potential employers. Verbal abuse is commonplace. Women report being warned not to get pregnant while a member of his lab.” JFC. The system is broken if 14 people are reporting abuses and no action is taken.
- “There is far too much power in the hands of professors in the German system,” says @leising.bsky.social. My latest @nature.com story digs into efforts to tackle the entrenched structural heirarchy that enables academic bullies.
- Stopped by local bookstore on the way home for new #BlueSkyBookClub reads: Honeysuckle Creek (important Apollo 11 📡) Been wanting to read @mattstrassler.bsky.social ‘Waves in an Impossible Sea’ for some time! And @virtualastro.bsky.social ‘The Moon’ looks good. Also: winter reading socks FTW.
- Dentist trip done ✅ I don’t go into town that often these days during the office week, but am always surprised at how pleasant the City of #Sydney is. For about 5 seconds there I missed working in the hustle and bustle, high up in the towers — but remembered I did that for 20 years already.
- If you like then you better put a ring on it! 🪐 @deep-twilight.bsky.social got a really nice pic of #Saturn during the time when it’s ring system is pretty much edge on to our perspective. And a couple of Moons! Really like the colour of the equatorial and higher latitude belts.
